About Gallery 106 and Casa Cubana

Gallery 106 is a non-profit gallery affiliated with MedAid.org, a grassroots non-profit organization that provides medical supplies and encourages cultural exchange between the United States and developing countries. Proceeds from the sales of art are paid to the artists and are used to donate medical supplies to Cuban neighborhood hospitals and clinics.

The gallery is designed to provide artists free expression with minimum encumbrances. "We don't curate shows," says Fran Magee, director of Gallery 106. "We provide a blank space to Cuba's best artists and say to the artist, 'You are our guest.'"

Casa Cubana is the cultural exchange program that invites artists from Cuba to Gallery 106 for art residencies, screens art videos from Cuba, and collects books and manuscripts for scholarly research.

Gallery 106 is the recipient of the Austin Critics Table award for Best Body of Work, 2002, Best Group Show, 2003 and Best Show, 2001. It was included among the Ten Best of 2001 in the Austin American Statesman.

Located at 2832 East Martin Luther King Blvd. in Austin, Texas. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, call 512-472-1219 or email Fran Magee at franmagee@medaid.org.
